PROPOSED MINIMUM WAGE
As per our previous communication, we at Indgro Multi Service Group pride ourselves on the
quality of Products and Services we provide to our values Clients. We therefore deem it necessary to pre-empt the following:
On Sunday, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the proposal of a National Minimum Wage of R3 500 at a press briefing at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) offices. This is R20 per hour.
Experts are divided on whether a proposed minimum wage is a positive development for South Africa’s economy. Various social partners, including unions, government and business, will deliberate on the findings of the NMW report which was compiled by a panel of experts.
Summary:
- The commission appointed to investigate a national minimum wage has recommended that the government implement an amount of R3,500 per month
- The commission, led by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, has also proposed that the minimum hourly rate be set at R20 an hour
- This, it said, should be enforced within the next two years, while small businesses maybe granted three years to implement it
- The commission found that almost 50 percent of employed South Africans earned less than the proposed minimum wage
- Ramaphosa emphasized that the panel was not endorsing the proposed figure as a living wage, but rather that it wanted to set a bare minimum towards the payment of workers
- As yet no date has been set for the implementation of the minimum wage.
